This is a guide to the workings of spirits and Sho-un, which is a special rank only available to members of the Shinkou and Akeru wolf packs.

The Spirits of SO - Story

Welcome to the magical land of Shinkou! I'll be your guide while you're here. Have you seen some of the inhabitants here on your journey? Saw some magic did you? Well, you can do it too! Just listen and I'll explain. You see this glowing orb by my shoulder? We call this a Spirit. No, not one of those ghosts or undead lost soul things. Shinkou Spirits were never dead. We think of them as living elements, though no one really understands what they truly are. Spirits communicate with each other in ways we can never understand.

The spirits are very important to Shinkou. Why? Because they are the source of magic here. Without magic, this land would die and that's why we call it the magical land of Shinkou! Spirits also have a very important job to do in this world, but for now, I'll explain how you can choose your own magic with a Spirit's help.

Spirits are all over this land, so it's easy to attract one's attention. Your type of thoughts will influence what kind of spirits will be attracted to you. If you don't have any magic already, spirits will follow you wanting to merge. They will only merge with your permission, so it's possible to decline and they will leave you alone, but you won't get any magical abilities that way. Merging with a spirit is easy, they do all the work. It doesn't hurt and it doesn't change you, the spirit simply attaches itself to your soul and gives you the ability to use it's magic. It will become a part of you, so after the merging, you won't even realize it's there!

Hmm? We gain magic but how do the Spirits benefit? Spirits on their own can use magic, but only small spells. They have large quantities of magic, but can only tap into it when they've merged with another creature. So needless to say, they're happy to help!

While rare, it is not unusual to be approached by a second spirit wanting to merge with you. If you accept, the merging procedure is the same as the first. This will give you access to two different elemental magics! Pretty lucky! This is unfortunately, the absolute limit though. After merging twice, spirits will no longer approach you or wish to merge with you.

Spirits also seem to have a like and dislike for others depending on their magic types. If you merge with a Water Spirit for example, Fire Spirits will avoid you. Which means the type spirit you merge with first will play a role in what kind of Spirit wants to merge with you the second time. We call these "conflicting elements".

Oh! And it's possible to be born with magic! Creatures born on Shinkou show signs of magic because the Spirits will merge with them as infants when they are still with their mothers. Spirits appear to like children the most, so a lot of pups are born this way.

So that's about all I can tell you about elements and magic and Spirits. Even after all that, there are still many things we do not understand about Spirits. Maybe in your stay you'll discover something new! I hope you like it here, I really had fun teaching you!

The Sho-un Ranks of Shinkou and Akeru

When creating a Sho-un character, do not give them any magic. Sho-un do not have magic without their bonded spirit partners. If you create spirit partners for a Sho-un the spirits need their own profiles listing their magic just like every other character.

Back again I see? So you heard about the Sho-un and are wondering what's so special about them? Then I will teach you! Within the Shinkou and Akeru packs, there is a special rank known as, Sho-un. Sho-un are unique individuals because they are always born without magic and spirits cannot merge with their souls. This may lead you to wonder why these individuals are so special. They are unique because they have the ability to understand the spirits. That's right! They can speak with them! Spirits trust Sho-un because they are able to hear their telepathic ways of communication.

This isn't all. Sho-un are unique because, while they cannot merge with a spirit, they are able to "bond" with a spirit. The spirit does not merge with a Sho-un's soul but instead, if there is a bond between a Sho-un and a spirit, the spirit can link with them and allow a Sho-un to use the spirit's type of magic.

A Sho-un can only bond with up to two spirits, but because the two spirits are not having to share the Sho-un's soul, the spirits usually do not care about their types even if they are of conflicting elements. So Sho-un are able to communicate with spirits, while others cannot and they are able to use magic even if the types conflict with each other. These are the qualities that make Sho-un unique.

There is also a difference between "bonded" and "merged" spirits. Spirits who have merged with an individual's soul cannot separate, while spirits who are bonded to a Sho-un are still able to fly around as their happy, spherical selves just like before. They are still individuals, but are able to allow the Sho-un to use their magic whenever they wish.
